A Dedication to Frances T. Payne For A Life Dedicated To Helping Others

Not too many people know this, but, I lived in Women In Distress (WID) the first three months of my life as a Broward county resident… and it was literally one of the best times of my life. My story with WID began when I had no where to go after a promise shelter for my children and myself was denied at the last minute. So, with only the clothing on our backs and a few dollars, I drove to the nearest police station to park my car to sleep (I felt it would be the safest place in an unknown area). It was a few minutes later when an Officer tapped on the window and inquired about my status. I explained my situation and he escorted my kids and I into the police station.

While there, I spoke to another Officer who mentioned there was an organization that may be able to house us. A phone call was made and I spoke to Rachel. After a series of questions, I was given instructions with directions to what would be my home for three months.  Once I arrived, I was questioned more while my kids slept on a made up bed on the floor. I spoke with Rachel about many things while we awaited dawn to come. She was very encouraging and level set me as to what will be expected from me while residing at the facility. My family was very fortunate because there were no available rooms until a young lady and her kids would be discharged from the facility.

As morning arrived, we were escorted to our apartment which would be shared with another young lady and her two kids. My kids and I got settled down and began our first day living in a shelter. My kids were taken to the day care on the premises and would speak with the Counselor for the kids and I would be taken to meet with the other residents and participate in group sessions. Here I would bond with a few ladies and my kids with other children but most of all we bonded with each other even deeper.

Since there was not TV, we spent a lot of time together. I would read to them; we always played some type of game; they would tell me how their day went in school and the daycare. They truly loved their daycare moments at Jack & Jill. This is where I met Fran Payne. She was the Executive Director of the day care and a wonderful person. We spoke ever so often and whenever we did it was always inspiring! We shared the same believe…”children are our future” You could see her passion for the kids and WID. Fran passed away last year November at the age of 82 just a month after her husband Darwin for over 61 years passed away that same year. sfl-frances-payne-20151103

You can read more about Fran Payne HERE

Well, this past Friday, I had to take a day off to deal with some thing personal in the Fort Lauderdale area. Now-a-days, I rarely get to go back to the community where I began my new journey in life. So, I decided to pass by Jack & Jill to say “HI” and see what was new with the facility. After a brief intro of myself, I got meet some of the “newer” staff members and to my surprise, I found out Ms. Mary Carter was still working at the facility. She was my youngest son’s teacher when he attended back in 1994 and she remembered him too!

20160415_155013(1)Lavern Swanson (right) & Mary Carter (left)

I also, inquired about the activity in the playground with all the volunteers. Come to find out that they were assisting with the remodeling of the playground in honor of the beloved Fran Payne. The daycare was paying homage to her that afternoon. Permitted to go ‘snoop’ about, I got a moment to witness people doing what I love to do best…creating a difference in our communities…

With this said, I want to take this moment and “THANK” Jack & Jill for being there for my kids and making affordable daycare for me during my transition in my first year in Broward county. Also, for those volunteers who were out there  giving the playground a new look, “THANK YOU”!

Currently, I am researching info for an upcoming project “Jobs4U” (more to come in a later post) and I came across this site regarding the various state minimum wage and overtime laws.  I found it interesting there wasn’t a minimum wage setup for some states.

Future Projects: Literacy ~ Homelessness ~ Animal Rescue

As you know Empowered Results is going for a new look. Indeed, there are other changes coming to this site. Since the whole ideal of this blog is to share, to communicate, and get involve with things that matter to me as a person, a mother, a grandmother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a co-worker, etc. I have found out that helping people is what I do best. It is rewarding to use your skills or share your knowledge of things when it helps others. Yet, my lack of consistency, funds, and knowledge have prevent me from moving forward with my desires to assist how I truly would like to with the people in the  communities I interact with daily.

That is, until someone explained to me that there are many ways that we can assist in our communities that will help with gaining knowledge which will later allow the funds to flow for the cause . Whether you volunteer or donate or just bring awareness to that cause, you are giving assistance. You can research the organizations but to see how it is really done, you have to volunteer and communicate with the people who are behind the cause you select to support. With that said, as the fouder of this blog, I have decided to become a Supporter of three concerns: Literacy, Homeless, and Animal Rescue. Why these causes?

LITERACY
There are too many of our youth who cannot read and are graduating from high school. This affects the individual throughout adulthood – throughout the person’s life. This some times leads to many negative outcomes which can include my next concern of interest: homelessness.

HOMELESSNESS
There are many people who walk throughout our communities that actually have jobs but no where to live. Yes, I found this unbelievable until I met someone  in this scenario. The fact there are so many people whom are homeless and really need the assistance, I feel compelled to do something. There are many challenges that come with this particular cause. I am learning more and more about the red tape associated with trying to do it the right way and will need to establish a network with the right people to accomplish my goal. 🙂

ANIMAL RESCUE

Anyone who knows me, knows I love animals. If I had acreage I would probably have a menagerie. Since there are so many organizations out there that assist with animals, I will try to keep my support within the range of my local community. As I do my homework on this cause and other two causes, it will not be so limited and I will be able to expand my support to other communities.

As my vision becomes more clear for this journey, it will be shared with you, my fellow Bloggers and dear Readers. Now you know what I am facing, I hope you can assist with the building blocks of knowledge. I seek information about organizations that are truly putting their dollars to such causes. Please feel free to send me information to empoweredresults@gmail.com.

Finally, I encourage you to pick a cause to support and share with all of us why you selected the cause.

Financial Freedom…Everyone’s Dream!!!

Prior to getting on Facebook tonight, I read Debt Free Stress Free – My Journey to a Debt Free Life by Malone Angella Fleming. I have read some books on this topic in the past but this book was short and to the point…making it an easy read. I must say it was so good, I did not put it down until I finished it. The story that Malone shares about her life and the scriptures that accent the storyline are paired with a wonderful feeling of empowerment as you read her book. She includes some bullets and a checklist to could aide in making your goals attainable through your journey to financial freedom. In fact, you can follow her on Facebook page for some of her ‘daily nuggets’ that will surely empower you as you walk this path towards becoming debt free!

Even if you are debt free or maintaining a discipline lifestyle towards a debt free lifestyle, you will enjoy this book enough to share as an excellent gift to others who may not be as financially free as you. I am adding Ms. Fleming’s book as the first one on my Book Shelf page (Coming Soon!) With that said, please feel free to use my Amazon affiliated by clicking on the photo to purchase the book. All funds will go towards the Funding Future Projects.

Already Missing You…

001 facebook_cover (1)

Tonight, I had to put a pet of 16 years to sleep on the Eve of Christmas. Some people will make their comments on this and probably won’t give a damn. But for pet lovers like me, this is hard to take especially around this time of year. For me it was especially hardest because I could not afford to keep him alive. I had to make this choice which makes it even worse. Although the Vet was stating it was the humane thing to do, it was so heartbreaking!

As I sit and post this story, I am just crying because I lost a wonderful pet…I lost my sidekick! You see, we had a wonderful thing. For instance, after a long day at work, I normally will go and play a game on the computer or spend some time watching a movie with CJ, my grandson. He would proceed to get on the desk and demand his attention by doing the various little annoying ‘love acts’ like stand in front of the screen; step on the keyboard; move the mouse over the edge until it would drop off the desk; or even step on the power strip to turn off the computer. Once he got my attention, he would lay on my lap and enjoy what time we had left before I would go to bed or leave to go to my home away from home.

I will miss my unique four-legged friend: the way he always seem to know when I was sadden of the death of a family member or friend or did his silly act after sniffing catnip or massaged my stomach thinking his nails was soothing for some reason or just laid down on my chest & feet whenever I was sick or cold. I will miss him so much.

For those who may never understand this loss I am posting about tonight, may never understand what pets really can do for people. For those who have a pet and reading this post, take a moment and give that special friend a hug. Enjoy the moments you have with it or them. Although I will probably not seek another pet for awhile, I will continue to encourage others to go to the local humane society or pet store or vet’s office and seek out what could be a wonderful pet for you or a love one. I know extraordinary feline has given me multiple moments of laughter and joy!

He will be missed deeply!

The Man-made Ecosystem

While listening to the dynamic duo Canadian sisters, Tegan and Sara You Tube playlist, a beautiful ad came on between songs. Of course I wanted to know more about this company, Unilever. So, my Google research began and I found some interesting info.

First, the company itself has dual ownerships based in London & The Netherlands. Unilever has been sold off and on. It appears that the Funds that own Unilever owns other major companies as well. Unilever is a major parent company for many corporations and owns many brands . One brand they own is Ben and Jerry’s ice cream (one of my favorites). So, I Googled Ben & Jerry’s parent company Unilever. I found an article about Unilever spending over $400,000 against GMO labeling.  So, it was very interesting to find this video about Ben & Jerry’s support for GMO labeling and being 80% free of GMOs at the time of the video. How confusing it is to see this? I mean, if Unilever is against GMO labeling, why would they allow Ben & Jerry’s to not only lobby for GMO labeling but make non-GMO products?

So why care about GMOs?

GMOs are genetically modified organisms.  In the Agricultural industry, the power to increase production of produce and livestock  has been the center of many corporations for years. Let’s face it, people have to eat to survive: right? According to the  US Environmental  Protection Agency (EPA) our US farmers produce about $143 billions of crops and about $10 million in livestock. Yet, many countries all over the world are putting billions of dollars to feeding the hungry because crops have been damage due to famine, war, etc… However, it is amazing to see how much food is wasted daily on an individual, local, national and even global basis.

According to those who support GMOs were going to be beneficial in improving the lives of countries with such concerns. Yet, who really benefit from this development. Perhaps, the CEO, the stockholders, the scientists, the investors, the lawmakers who support such companies like Unilever or Monsanto, who claim to do what they do to improve agriculture.  Although, I wonder if these people actually eat their products that they are placing on the shelf in the markets for us, the consumers to purchase.

Perhaps I am just really naive on the whole matter.I guess it is obvious on how I feel about this matter. In the past, I was concern about using the hybrid producing techniques in plants and animals because of cases of the sterilization or instability of the species/seeds afterwards. However, they were not being genetically modified between unrelated organisms for specific characteristics. Yet, this new innovation is really questionable on its true benefits for us. First, if we are what we eat, what affects will GMOs really have on our bodies over a period of time? Also, if there was nothing to high, why are these companies fighting so hard to prevent the labeling of GMO products? This man-made ecosystem may have been conceived with the idea to help us end world hunger or produce some means of food source. However, history shows that we never know where to draw the line and cause more damage than good.

Below are some links I found during my researching of this subject. Personally, I am adjusting my lifestyle to a more organic food change. As I get more educated on the matter, I hope to share more information in future posts. Please feel free to share your opinion on the subject.

Best regards!

An Intriguing Religion … Shamanism

I was visited by Shamanic Tracking  and wanted to share the following post,  Searching for ayahuasca somewhere in Germany. Although I am not a religious person, I feel that I am spiritually inclined and attempt to learn more about other cultures and religions. Thus gaining understanding  so to learn how to respect others even more.

As I mentioned to the founder of this blog, I have heard about Shamanism but never really checked it out.  I was  in Texas when a friend of mine told me stories that were shared from daughter to daughter. While I cannot share her name per her request back then, I can share that she is decedent of Inca Shamanism healers. I believe she now practices the religion.

Of course, back then I did not understand that this was a religion but did feel connected when she shared her heritage. In the brief time of our friendship, I did find my passion for animals and the environment around me. However, I was also given a different way of looking at things in life in general.

So, today I read more on Shamanism. As I began to read more on it and found it to be a very intriguing and some what mystical religion!

Yours truly!

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Earth Day

Earth Day serves to remind all of us on our responsibilities to maintaining this wonderful Planet we live on. It originated 1970 due to a Wisconsin Senator (Gaylord Nelson) efforts in dealing with pollution concerns in the United States.

Although the is much controversy about climate control and other environment concerns, one things is a fact, our Earth has been affected by the ways we have used It’s resources. Check out the most recognized website, www.earthday.org  and see what you can do to sustain this wonderful place we live on.

I encourage you to have a picnic in a park or stroll on a beach: whatever you do, enjoy the wonderful landscape this world has to offer. Then, remember why it is important to keep it this world we live on as environmentally clean and safe for all generations to come!

Pet Companions…

For those who have  pet companions, I am sure you can relate to this story: A Final Farewell to Honey the Skinnydog. I have had pets throughout my life. I enjoy there company some times more than humans friends in this world.

Let’s take  is very old.  I had him since he was about 6 weeks (1997). He followed me home one day. Although he was stolen and returned back to us 2 years later, he has always been apart of my family.

He never stays too still for a photo.  I don’t think he likes to poise for them.  This photo of him is from the early days.  He can’t really jump up on the washer and is definitely taking it easier now.  Yet, he is still spunky.  I try to make it a point to hangout with him more when at home. It seems as if he really enjoys my company as much as I do his purring and stomach massages.

Right now, we only have dogs and cats! Not so much the menagerie the household has had in the past: a rooster, bunnies, iguanas, turtles,  snakes and birds.  Yet, it would really seem weird not to have at least one pet in the home.

So, if you love pets and have one or many of those companions around you and your family, take a moment and go through the photo albums;  give them a hug or a wonderful treat just to show some appreciation!

After randomly surfing the web, I came across this post The Meat of the Issues | Livestock, meat and everything in between on the blog, Meat of the Issues. created by Travis Arp. As I read more posts, I found out the blogger got hired in the meat industry under his post New Chapter .

So, why is this so interesting to me? Well, there are 2 things that caught my eye in his post, New Chapter:

First, that fact the he feels that he may be limited to / possibly may have to end his blogging days due to the fact that he of his new position within the meat industry.  I know this may sound selfish, but it will be so disappointing since I only found his blog today! 😦 I hope he will consider keeping it live and continuing his blogging. Besides, I am sure the company that hired him did a basic background check and Google his name finding it associated to the blog. It apparently did not harm his chance one bit… he still got hired!

Finally,  he posts, ” I am certain these opportunities would not have come about without the experiences and connections I have made during my time at Missouri, Florida, and especially Colorado.”  This was wonderful to read because through social networking, people are exposed to great opportunities. I get excited about networking because of the wonderful benefits. It is without saying, I love sharing what I know with others. Knowledge is powerful!!!!

Well, I hope you will consider keeping the blog live with a few posts now and then! Remember the reason why you began to blog, Travis?  You post, ‘My hope is to share my experiences and knowledge here with industry friends and consumers alike.’ I am sure you will find a way!

Best wishes to you and Sara!!!

Kids – National Wildlife Federation

I know it has been awhile since I last posted something, but I have been so busy! However, I came across this site, Kids – National Wildlife Federation, while surfing through many local sites for my county (Broward).  I thought, “How cool! Now, I have some more things to do with my grandson!”

Well, I hope you enjoy enough to share with others!

Have a great weekend!
